Cremation Plots
Since 1830, Lithopolis Cemetery has been a place for traditional burials. In 1996, a new mausoleum was erected, offering families the choice of cremation niches. In the spring of 2013, Lithopolis Cemetery added cremation plots to its offerings for clients. These 24”x40” lots are a fraction of the cost of a traditional plot and can accommodate all urns on the market.
Susan Malone, Director of Lithopolis Cemetery, believes that they are the first cemetery in Fairfield County to offer this lower cost option to clients. “We hope that families will utilize this option not just for themselves, but for loved ones whose remains they have struggled to find a place for. We believe that every life has a legacy and needs a place of permanence.”
The Cremation Association of North America (CANA) reported in 2011 that 40.62 percent of all deaths in America resulted in cremation. CANA predicts this number to rise to 46.6 percent by 2015, an increase of approximately 2 percent per year.
The reason families are choosing cremation includes the reduced cost, a varying array of service options, the positive environmental impact and a higher religious acceptance. R. Michael Eddy of the Matthews International Corporation, a leader in memorialization products, says, “Cemeteries were created for family heritage and legacy. If cremated (remains) are not left in cemeteries along with the in-ground remains of past family members, then entire generations of families will be lost.”
Lithopolis Cemetery also offers a chapel free of charge for services of those who will be interred traditionally or by cremation, on their grounds.
The Cremation Garden of Eternity offers a flowering pear tree, a bench for time to sit and reflect and a peaceful space for your loved one. Bronze or granite flat markers are allowed in this section.
